Chapter 29 - The Solid Ground

Mateo walked across the wooden porch, the planks creaking softly beneath his weight. He handed a mug of coffee to Laura and sat down beside her, wrapping a strong, protective arm around her waist.

Laura leaned into him, resting her head on his shoulder. She looked incredibly peaceful. The fierce, terrifying warrior who had defended her home with a kitchen knife and an automatic rifle was still there, resting just beneath the surface, but she no longer needed to carry the armor every single day.

"They're making a lot of noise," Laura smiled, watching Jimena tackle Emiliano onto the grass in a fit of uncontrollable giggles.

Mateo kissed her temple, his eyes locked on his children. The fear that had once defined his entire existence—the fear of a knock on the door, a shadow in the alley, a mysterious envelope in the mail—was completely gone.

"It's the best sound in the world," Mateo said, taking a sip of his coffee.

For years, Mateo had believed that safety meant running. He had believed that the only way to protect his family was to hide in the shadows, to change their names, to live like ghosts in a world controlled by powerful, violent men.

But standing his ground in this small, noisy, messy house in Guadalajara had taught him the ultimate truth. You cannot outrun the dark. You can only stand firmly in the light and refuse to let the darkness enter.

He looked down at the wooden planks beneath his feet.

For the first time in a very long time, there were no hidden compartments holding guns. There were no false bottoms holding fake passports or emergency cash. There were no secrets beneath their feet.

There was only the solid, beautiful ground of a family that had survived the dark, fought the monsters, and finally found their way back to the light.
