Chapter 27 - The Morning Light

The aftermath of the battle was chaotic, loud, and blindingly bright. Federal Police cruisers flooded the quiet suburban street, their red and blue lights illuminating the pouring rain. Heavily armed federal agents secured the perimeter, arresting the wounded Arturo Vargas and dragging the surviving mercenaries out of the destroyed house.

Because Hector had meticulously scrubbed the false terrorist flags from the national database and provided absolute proof of Arturo's unprovoked assault, Mateo and Laura were not treated as suspects. They were treated as victims who had miraculously survived a brutal cartel home invasion.

A federal detective, wearing a yellow rain slicker, stood on the porch, taking Mateo’s statement.

"You defended your family against a highly trained cartel hit squad using a shotgun and a kitchen knife, sir," the detective said, looking at the destruction inside the house in pure disbelief. "I don't know who you are, Mateo, but you are either the luckiest man in Mexico, or the most dangerous."

"I'm just a father," Mateo replied simply, watching as Arturo was shoved into the back of an armored police transport vehicle. The monster was finally, permanently caged.

As the sun began to rise, painting the gray morning sky in brilliant streaks of pink and gold, the rain finally stopped. The police finished their investigation and slowly began to clear out, leaving the suburban street in an exhausted, heavy silence.

Mateo and Laura walked back into the ruined house. The living room was completely destroyed. The drywall was riddled with bullet holes, the furniture was shredded, and the beautiful, colorful drawings Jimena had made were torn to pieces.

It looked like a war zone.

Laura looked around the destruction, a small, tired smile touching the corners of her mouth. "We're going to need a lot of spackle."

Mateo laughed—a genuine, deep sound of absolute relief. He wrapped his arms around his wife, holding her fiercely.

"Let's go get the kids," Mateo whispered, kissing her neck.

They walked into the kitchen, pushing the heavy, debris-covered rug aside. Mateo unlocked the heavy iron hatch of the storm cellar and pulled it open.

"Emiliano? Jimena?" Laura called down into the darkness, her voice breaking with emotion. "It's Mommy and Daddy. The Shadow Game is over."

Two small, terrified faces peered up from the concrete darkness. When they saw their parents' faces, bathed in the warm morning light, they scrambled up the ladder, throwing themselves into Mateo and Laura’s arms.
