Chapter 21 - The Storm Approaches

The suburban street outside was agonizingly still. A light drizzle had begun to fall, the gentle patter of rain against the windows creating a deceptive sense of tranquility. Inside the dark, silent house, the tension was thick enough to slice with a knife.

Mateo crouched in the shadows of the living room, his back pressed against the wall near the front entrance. The shotgun rested heavy in his hands. Across the hallway, concealed in the deep darkness of the laundry alcove, Laura waited with the suppressed pistol. They had removed their shoes, standing in thick socks to eliminate the sound of their own footsteps.

At 1:50 AM, a sleek, matte-black utility van drove slowly down the street with its headlights turned off. It parked two houses down, the engine cutting off silently.

Mateo watched through the slit in the curtains. Four men emerged from the back of the van. They were dressed in heavy black tactical gear, wearing Kevlar vests and bulky night-vision goggles. They moved with terrifying military precision, fanning out across the front lawn, avoiding the motion-sensor floodlights Mateo had installed by keeping to the deep shadows of the jacaranda trees.

"Four tangos. Front yard," Mateo whispered into a small, short-range radio clipped to his collar.

"Copy," Laura’s steady voice crackled softly in his earpiece.

The mercenaries approached the front porch. One man knelt by the heavy wooden door, pulling out a set of electronic lock picks. Another man moved toward the side window, raising a heavy, suppressed automatic rifle.

They thought they were breaching an unsuspecting, terrified family. They had no idea they were walking into a perfectly constructed kill box.

Mateo reached out and flipped the master breaker switch on the wall beside him.

The simulated lights and radio playing in the master bedroom instantly died. The entire house plunged into absolute, suffocating darkness.

Outside, the mercenary picking the lock paused, startled by the sudden blackout. He signaled to the team leader. The leader nodded and pointed aggressively at the door. There would be no more stealth.

With a deafening, splintering crash, a heavy steel battering ram smashed the front door entirely off its hinges. The strike team poured into the living room, their weapons raised, scanning the darkness.

The battle for the messy, noisy house had begun.
