Chapter 14 - No More Running

When Mateo returned to the small, noisy house in the suburbs, the atmosphere was painfully cheerful. Laura was in the kitchen, helping Jimena with her math homework, while Emiliano was on the living room floor, drawing a complex battle between spaceships.

Mateo walked in, his clothes smelling of grease, sweat, and adrenaline. He locked the front door, engaged the deadbolt, and pulled the heavy curtains shut.

Laura looked up from the kitchen table, her smile fading instantly as she read the dark, absolute seriousness in her husband’s eyes. She sent the children to their shared bedroom with a gentle but firm command. Once the heavy wooden door clicked shut, Mateo placed the suppressed pistol on the kitchen table.

"Arturo Vargas is alive," Mateo said, the words tasting like ash in his mouth. "He tracked us to Guadalajara. His men took pictures of the kids in the backyard yesterday. I just dealt with one of his scouts at the market."

Laura stared at the black metal weapon on the table. For a brief, terrifying moment, Mateo expected her to break down. He expected the trauma of Coyoacán to resurface, to drown her in the panic they had fought so hard to escape.

Instead, Laura’s eyes hardened into pure, uncompromising steel. She didn't cry. She reached out and placed her hand over Mateo’s.

"We are not running, Mateo," Laura said, her voice completely steady, vibrating with a fierce, maternal rage. "If we pack our bags and flee in the middle of the night, we teach Emiliano and Jimena that they have to live in fear forever. We teach them that monsters always win. I will not let Arturo Vargas take our home away from us."

"He is coming to kill us, Laura. He survived the fire. He is completely unstable," Mateo warned, desperate to make her understand the gravity of the threat.

"Then we finish the job," Laura replied coldly. "We survived Querétaro because we were desperate. Now, we are prepared. This is our house. Our ground. If Arturo wants to come into our home and threaten our children, we will make sure he never walks out of it."

Mateo looked at his wife, entirely in awe of her strength. The victim was gone. The protector had arrived.
