Chapter 26 - The End of the Ghost
Arturo Vargas let out a shrieking howl of agony, collapsing onto the wet, muddy grass of the front lawn. The pistol he had been reaching for slipped from his grasp, splashing into a puddle several feet away.
Mateo didn't give him a chance to recover. He sprinted off the porch, tackling Arturo into the mud. He grabbed Arturo by the collar of his ruined suit, his fist raised, ready to deliver a lethal, final blow to the man who had terrorized his family for years.
"Do it," Arturo wheezed, blood spilling from his mouth, his scarred face twisted in a defiant, hateful grin. "Kill me, Mateo. Become the monster you spent your entire life running from."
Mateo stared down at the broken, pathetic man bleeding in the mud. He thought about the fire in Coyoacán. He thought about the endless nights of running, the paralyzing fear, and the desperate struggle to keep his children safe. He wanted to kill Arturo. Every instinct in his body screamed at him to crush the monster’s throat.
But then, Mateo looked back at the house. He saw Laura standing on the porch, lowering the rifle, her eyes filled with a fierce, protective love, not hatred. He thought about Emiliano and Jimena waiting safely in the storm cellar beneath the floorboards.
If he killed Arturo now, executed him in cold blood on the front lawn, he would cross a line he could never uncross. He would become exactly what Arturo wanted him to be.
Mateo slowly lowered his fist. He didn't want to be a killer. He wanted to be a father.
"I'm not like you, Arturo," Mateo said quietly, his voice carrying the immense, unbreakable weight of his humanity. "I don't need to kill you to defeat you."
Mateo stood up, leaving Arturo writhing in the mud. He walked back to the porch, taking Laura’s hand.

In the distance, the wail of police sirens began to echo through the suburban streets. Hector had kept his final promise. Once he confirmed the strike team had been neutralized, Hector had anonymously forwarded the digital evidence of Arturo’s massive wire fraud, money laundering, and the illegal hack on the national banking system directly to the Federal Police, along with the GPS coordinates of the suburban house.
The authorities weren't coming for Mateo. They were coming for the most wanted cartel enforcer in Jalisco.
