Chapter 20 - The Unseen Trigger|

Six months later.

The annual Boston Business Gala was in full swing at the city's grandest hotel. Over five hundred influential guests filled the room, oblivious to the high-stakes game being played in the shadows.

Ethan Whitmore stood near the center stage, dressed in an immaculate tuxedo, delivering a speech on the company’s new international security foundation.

Standing discreetly near the VIP balcony, wearing a stunning midnight-blue evening gown that cleverly concealed her tactical harness, was Naomi Reyes.

Her earpiece chimed softly. "Team Leader, target acquired at North Entrance. Matches the profile of Ivan Petrov, senior enforcer for the Red Syndicate."

"Copy," Naomi whispered into her collar mic. "Hold positions. Let him make his move."

Naomi watched from above as a tall, imposing man in a suit moved smoothly through the crowd, heading directly toward the stage where Ethan was wrapping up his speech.

Ivan’s right hand drifted toward the inside of his jacket.

Naomi didn't hesitate. She stepped onto the balcony railing and dropped down twelve feet onto the velvet curtains, landing silently behind the shadow of a decorative marble archway.

She intercepted Ivan just as he raised a miniature, high-tech dart shooter pointed straight at Ethan’s back.

Naomi clamped her hand over his weapon, her grip like a vise.

Ivan turned in shock, staring at the breathtaking woman in the blue gown who held his wrist with terrifying strength.

"You made a mistake coming to my city," Naomi whispered in his ear.

With a swift, invisible motion, she disarmed him, twisted his shoulder, and signaled her undercover tactical team, who instantly surrounded Petrov and moved him out through the service doors without a single guest noticing.

Ethan finished his speech to thunderous applause. He stepped off the stage, his eyes searching the room until they met Naomi’s.

She offered him a subtle, confident nod.

Ethan walked over to her, sliding his hand around her waist as reporters flared their camera flashes nearby.

"Is the room secure, Head of Security?" Ethan murmured with a warm, loving smile.

Naomi smiled back, leaning in close to his ear as her eyes caught a subtle movement near the far corner of the ballroom—a mysterious woman in a mask, staring directly at them, holding a black envelope bearing an unknown wax seal.

"For now, Ethan," Naomi whispered softly, her hand resting over her concealed knife. "For now..."
