Chapter 1 - The Catch Under the Chandeliers|

Nobody expected the maid to catch Vanessa Sterling’s hand. They expected the slap. They expected the sound of skin meeting skin beneath the crystal chandeliers of the Whitmore estate.
They expected the quiet woman in the pale gray uniform to stumble backward, lower her eyes, and apologize for whatever imaginary offense Vanessa had decided she had committed. Most of all, they expected Ethan Whitmore to do what powerful men had done for generations when cruelty came dressed in diamonds: look away.
Instead, Vanessa’s wrist stopped less than an inch from Naomi Reyes’s face.
Three hundred guests fell dead silent.
Naomi did not squeeze. She did not twist. She merely held Vanessa’s wrist with one hand, her expression calm, her feet planted beneath her as if the marble floor had grown around them.
Vanessa’s face changed from fury to sheer confusion.
"Let go of me," she hissed.
"I will," Naomi replied quietly, "when you stop trying to hit me."
A nervous laugh escaped someone near the champagne fountain. Vanessa heard it, and humiliation flooded her eyes. She jerked her arm back, raised her other hand, and lunged forward with all her weight.
That was when the maid moved.
One moment Vanessa was charging forward in a silver designer gown. The next, Naomi had stepped aside, redirected her momentum, and guided her through the air in one smooth motion. Vanessa’s jeweled heels left the floor. Gasps erupted throughout the ballroom.
Naomi controlled the fall, turning Vanessa just enough that she landed on her side among shattered champagne glasses and white rose petals. No bones broke, but Vanessa’s dignity was shattered.
Naomi stood above her, breathing evenly.
"Call security!" Vanessa screamed from the floor, tears of rage smearing her mascara. "Get this filthy woman out of here!"

Ethan Whitmore stepped out from the crowd, looking at his sprawling fiancée, then at the quiet maid in the gray uniform.
"Don't touch her," Ethan said, his voice ringing across the silent room.
