Chapter 13 - The Downfall of Sterling|
By sunrise, the Whitmore estate was swarming with federal agents and local police cruisers, their red and blue lights flashing against the wet driveways.
Richard Sterling was arrested at his private airport hangar at 5:30 AM while attempting to board a jet to Dubai. Vanessa Sterling was picked up at her penthouse, still wearing her ruined, champagne-stained engagement dress, sobbing as officers placed her in handcuffs for conspiracy to commit murder.
In the mansion library, old Harold Whitmore sat in his leather armchair, sipping warm tea while a federal agent took his statement.
"You knew Sterling was desperate, didn't you, Grandfather?" Ethan asked, standing near the fireplace.
"Richard Sterling was drowning in debt for two years," Harold said calmly. "The merger was his attempt to steal Whitmore assets. When you broke the engagement, he panicked."
Harold looked at Naomi, who stood near the window, dressed in a sleek black tactical suit instead of her gray uniform.
"You saved this family twice in twelve hours, Naomi," Harold said softly.
"I did my job, Mr. Whitmore," Naomi replied politely.

"Your contract as an evaluator ends today," Harold noted, setting his teacup down. "What do you want to do now?"
Naomi looked at Ethan. He was watching her with an intensity that made her heart race.
