Chapter 6 - The Trial

|
The courtroom smelled of polished wood, stale anxiety, and floor wax.
It had taken eighteen months to bring Veronica to trial. Eighteen months of legal maneuvering, suppressed evidence being brought to light, and the slow, grueling process of preparing an eleven-year-old child to testify against the woman who had terrorized her.
Alexander sat in the gallery, exactly two rows behind the prosecutor’s table. He wore a dark suit, his expression a mask of impenetrable stone. His hands rested flat on his knees.
Sofia sat beside him.
She wore a simple blue dress. She looked incredibly small in the massive, imposing room.
Across the aisle, Veronica sat at the defense table. She wore a modest, tailored grey suit designed to project an image of a respectable, misunderstood mother figure. Her hair was pulled back. She did not look toward Alexander or Sofia.
"All rise," the bailiff announced.
Judge Martin, a stern woman with a reputation for zero tolerance regarding child abuse, took her seat at the bench.
"Prosecution, you may call your first witness."
The prosecutor, an aggressive litigator named Sarah Vance, stood. "The State calls Martha Higgins."
Martha walked to the stand. She looked older, her shoulders stooped under the weight of her complicity. She took the oath, her voice barely a whisper.
"Mrs. Higgins," Sarah Vance began, approaching the podium. "You were employed as the head housekeeper for Alexander Vance for seven years, correct?"
"Yes."
"And during that time, who gave the direct orders regarding Sofia Vance's daily care?"
"Mrs. Veronica Vance."
"Did Mr. Vance ever countermand those orders?"
Martha glanced briefly at Alexander.
"No. Mr. Vance was rarely home. He traveled for business. When he was home, he assumed everything was being handled."
"Handled," Sarah repeated, emphasizing the word. "Let the record reflect State's Exhibit D. A collection of video files recovered from Mrs. Higgins' personal phone."
The large screen in the courtroom flickered to life.
The video was silent, but the images were damning. It showed Veronica standing over a kneeling Sofia in the grand hall. Veronica was holding a damp cloth, forcing Sofia to scrub the marble floor repeatedly. When Sofia slowed down, Veronica’s hand lashed out, striking the child across the back of the head.
A collective gasp echoed through the gallery.
Alexander squeezed his eyes shut, his jaw tightening until his teeth ached. He felt Sofia’s small hand slip into his. He held it firmly.
"Mrs. Higgins," Sarah Vance asked, pausing the video. "Why did you record this?"
"Because," Martha cried, tears finally spilling over. "Because I knew if I told Mr. Alexander without proof, Mrs. Veronica would just say the child was lying. And she would fire me. I needed my job. I'm so sorry."
"No further questions," Sarah Vance said.
The defense attorney stood up, a sleek man in a sharp suit.
"Mrs. Higgins, isn't it true that you were recently given a generous severance package by Mr. Vance in exchange for your testimony today?"
"Objection. Badgering the witness," Sarah stated calmly.

"Sustained. Watch your tone, counselor," the judge warned.
The trial was going to be brutal, but as Alexander looked down at Sofia, he knew they would not retreat.
