Chapter 13 - The Lake House

|

A year passed, marked by the slow, steady rhythm of construction and the even slower, essential rhythm of therapy.

Moving day into the lake house was chaotic, loud, and wonderfully normal.

Alexander carried a heavy box of books into the living room, setting it down next to the plush, oversized sofa they had picked out together. The house smelled of fresh paint, cut cedar, and the crisp lake air blowing in through the open sliding doors.

Sofia came bounding down the carpeted stairs, holding her glass horse.

"My room is perfect, Dad," she announced, placing the horse carefully on the mantle above the stone fireplace.

"I'm glad you like it," Alexander said, wiping sweat from his forehead.

Martha walked out of the kitchen, carrying two glasses of iced lemonade. She looked relaxed, her uniform replaced by comfortable jeans and a simple blouse.

"The kitchen is wonderful, Mr. Alexander," Martha said, handing them the drinks. "And the pantry is fully stocked."

"Thank you, Martha," Alexander smiled.

He walked over to the open sliding doors and stepped out onto the large wooden deck. The sun was beginning to set, casting a golden, peaceful light across the rippling surface of the lake.

Sofia walked out and stood beside him, leaning her arms against the wooden railing.

"It's quiet here," she observed.

"Is it a good quiet?" he asked cautiously, remembering the terrifying silence of the old mansion.

Sofia closed her eyes, listening to the gentle lapping of the water and the distant call of a loon.

"Yes," she said softly. "It's a safe quiet."

Alexander wrapped his arm around her shoulders, pulling her gently against his side. She didn't flinch. She leaned into him, resting her head against his chest.

He knew there would still be nightmares. He knew trust was a fragile bridge that had to be maintained every single day. But standing there on the deck of a house they had built together, Alexander finally believed they were going to be okay.
