Chapter 18 - The Empty Nest

|

Driving back to the lake house alone was the hardest thing Alexander had done in years.

The truck felt massive and incredibly empty without her voice filling the silence. When he pulled into the driveway, the house looked beautiful, peaceful, and entirely too quiet.

He walked inside, dropping his keys on the counter. Martha had left a plate of dinner in the fridge, but he wasn't hungry. He walked up the stairs, stopping at the open door of Sofia’s bedroom.

The bed was perfectly made, the desk was clear, and the curtains were drawn back, revealing the dark surface of the lake outside.

It was the first time in eight years he was truly alone.

He walked into his study, pouring himself a glass of whiskey, and sat in his heavy leather chair. He looked at the framed photographs on his desk. Pictures of them building the house, pictures of Sofia’s middle school graduation, pictures of them hiking in the mountains.

He had spent the last eight years dedicating every ounce of his energy to repairing the damage he had allowed to happen. He had restructured his company to ensure he was home by six o'clock every night. He had attended every parent-teacher conference, every therapy session, and every quiet dinner.

He had built his entire life around ensuring she felt safe.

Now, she was safe. She was out in the world, strong, brilliant, and capable.

He took a sip of the whiskey, the burn grounding him in the moment. He wasn't losing her; he had successfully raised her. The empty house wasn't a tragedy; it was a testament to a job completed.

He picked up his phone and typed a quick text message.

I'm proud of you. Sleep well.

He hit send, placed the phone on the desk, and allowed himself to finally, truly relax.
