Chapter 11 - The Empty House

|

The mansion felt different when they returned that evening.

It was no longer a crime scene, and it was no longer a courtroom battleground. The legal victory was absolute, but the house itself still held the ghosts of the past.

Alexander walked into the grand hall, the marble floor gleaming under the chandeliers. He stopped in the exact spot where Sofia had been forced to kneel.

Sofia stood beside him, holding the small glass horse with the broken ear.

"What are we going to do with this house?" Sofia asked, looking up at the high, vaulted ceilings.

"I don't want to live here anymore," Alexander admitted, looking at the extravagant, cold walls that had served as a prison for his daughter. "There are too many bad memories here. I want to sell it."

Sofia looked surprised. "But you built this house. You told me it was your masterpiece."

"My masterpiece is standing right next to me," Alexander said softly, placing a hand on her shoulder. "A house is just bricks and glass. It doesn't matter if the people inside it aren't safe. We can build a new house. Together."

"Can it have a smaller hallway?" Sofia asked seriously. "This one echoes too much."

Alexander smiled, a genuine, warm expression that reached his eyes.

"It can have carpet everywhere," he promised. "And no marble floors to scrub."

"And a room for Martha?"

"Yes. A room for Martha."

They walked into the kitchen, where Martha had prepared a simple, warm dinner of roast chicken and vegetables. There were no formal place settings, no strict rules about posture or silence.

They ate at the small island counter, talking about normal, mundane things. Sofia talked about a book she was reading. Alexander talked about finding a new piece of land near the lake.

It wasn't perfect. The scars were still there, invisible but deeply felt. But the silence in the house was no longer heavy with fear. It was just the quiet sound of a family finally beginning to heal.
