Chapter 15 - The Support Group

|

The foundation Alexander had created in Elena’s name had grown rapidly. What started as a legal fund had expanded into a comprehensive support network for children escaping high-profile, abusive households.

One evening a month, the foundation hosted a confidential support group in a secure, private community center downtown.

Alexander drove Sofia to the center on a rainy Tuesday evening. She was fourteen now, navigating the complex world of high school with a quiet, fierce resilience.

They parked in the underground garage and took the private elevator up to the meeting room.

Dr. Lane was waiting at the door, smiling warmly as they approached.

"Hi, Sofia," Dr. Lane greeted her. "We have two new members tonight. They are a bit nervous."

"I remember being nervous," Sofia said, adjusting the strap of her bag.

"Do you want me to wait out here?" Alexander asked, stepping back toward the hallway. He never pressured her to attend, and he never intruded on the sessions.

Sofia looked into the room, seeing a circle of chairs occupied by teenagers who all carried the same invisible, heavy burdens.

"No," Sofia said, turning back to him. "I'm okay. You can go home, Dad. Martha is making stew tonight."

"Are you sure?"

"I'm sure," she smiled. "I'll call you when we're done."

Alexander watched her walk into the room. She didn't hesitate. She walked directly to a young girl who looked terrified, sitting alone in the corner. Sofia pulled up a chair next to her, offering a warm, understanding smile, and introduced herself.

She was taking her pain and turning it into armor for someone else.

Alexander walked back to the elevator, a profound sense of peace washing over him. He had spent years trying to control the world with money and power, only to realize that true strength was sitting in a circle of folding chairs, offering a hand to a stranger in the dark.
