Chapter 16 - The College Letter

|
Four years later, the lake house was filled with the chaotic energy of a high school senior preparing for the next chapter.
Sofia sat at the kitchen island, staring intently at a thick, white envelope resting on the granite counter. It bore the crest of a prestigious university on the East Coast.
Alexander walked into the kitchen holding a mug of coffee. He saw the envelope and froze.
"Is that the one?" he asked, his voice thick with anticipation.
"It came in the mail today," Sofia said, not taking her eyes off the paper. "I've been staring at it for twenty minutes."
"Do you want me to open it?"
"No," she said quickly, reaching out and grabbing the envelope. "I need to do it."
She slid her finger under the flap, tearing the paper with a sharp, ragged sound. She pulled out the thick, embossed letterhead and unfolded it slowly.
Alexander watched her face intently, looking for any sign of disappointment.
Sofia’s eyes scanned the first paragraph. Her breath hitched. A slow, massive smile spread across her face, illuminating the room.
"I got in," she whispered, her voice trembling with shock. "Dad, I got into the psychology program."
Alexander slammed his coffee mug down on the counter and rushed around the island, pulling her into a massive, crushing hug.
"I knew you would," he laughed, tears springing to his eyes. "I never doubted it for a second."
"They offered me the scholarship," Sofia laughed, hugging him back fiercely. "I did it."
She wanted to be a child psychologist. She wanted to specialize in trauma recovery for adolescents. She wanted to stand in the gap between broken children and the systems that failed them.
"We need to celebrate," Alexander declared, stepping back and wiping his eyes. "Dinner in the city. Whatever you want."
"I want pizza," Sofia laughed. "Just here. By the lake."
May you like
"Pizza by the lake it is," he agreed.
It was a simple celebration, but it was perfect. It was a victory not bought with Alexander’s money or influence, but earned entirely through Sofia’s unyielding determination and brilliant mind.
