Chapter 17 - The Departure

|

August arrived, bringing with it the bittersweet reality of change.

Alexander’s truck was packed to the brim with cardboard boxes, suitcases, and a small, potted succulent Sofia insisted on bringing to her dorm room.

They stood in the driveway of the lake house, the morning sun casting long shadows across the gravel.

Martha stood on the porch, wiping tears from her eyes with a handkerchief. She hugged Sofia tightly.

"You call me if the dining hall food is terrible," Martha demanded, her voice thick with emotion. "I will overnight ship you proper meals."

"I promise, Martha," Sofia smiled, hugging the older woman back. "Thank you for everything."

Alexander opened the passenger door of the truck. "Ready?"

"Ready," Sofia said, climbing in.

The drive to the university took six hours. They listened to music, talked about her class schedule, and avoided the heavy, impending reality of the goodbye.

When they arrived on campus, it was a chaotic sea of nervous freshmen and tearful parents hauling mini-fridges up flights of stairs. Alexander carried her heaviest boxes to her third-floor dorm room, setting them down on the bare mattress.

"Well," Alexander said, looking around the small, sterile room. "It's not the lake house."

"It's perfect," Sofia said, opening a box and pulling out her glass horse. She placed it carefully on the desk near the window.

They spent the next hour unpacking, making the bed, and organizing her desk. When there was nothing left to do, the silence stretched between them, heavy and profound.

"I guess I should get out of your way," Alexander said, his voice cracking slightly. He stuffed his hands into his pockets, suddenly feeling entirely lost.

Sofia walked over to him, wrapping her arms tightly around his waist, resting her head against his chest.

"Thank you, Dad," she whispered.

"For what?" he asked, holding her close, pressing a kiss to the top of her head.

May you like

"For staying," she said simply. "For not leaving when it was hard."

"I will never leave you, Sofia," he promised fiercely. "Never."
