Chapter 5

|

The preparations for the first annual Elena Vance Foundation Gala had completely transformed the lower grounds of the Southampton estate. Massive white marquee tents billowed gently in the evening ocean breeze, illuminated by thousands of warm, golden fairy lights strung through the ancient oak trees. The scent of saltwater mixed effortlessly with the fragrance of the catered hors d'oeuvres and fresh floral arrangements.

Inside the main house, Elena stood before a full-length antique mirror, adjusting the delicate diamond clasp of her evening gown. She looked radiant, her eyes sparkling with a profound sense of purpose that went far beyond the luxurious fabric of her dress.

Rosa stepped into the master suite, holding a digital tablet and looking every inch the formidable Executive Director she had become. She wore a sharp, tailored navy suit that commanded immediate respect.

"The caterers are fully set up, Elena," Rosa reported, tapping her screen with a stylus. "And the local press pool has agreed to our perimeter guidelines. No flashing cameras near the nursery windows, exactly as Julian requested."

"Thank you, Rosa," Elena smiled warmly, turning away from the mirror to face her friend. "I don't know how you manage to keep all these moving parts in perfect synchronization. You are an absolute lifesaver."

"I just treat the logistics like a military operation," Rosa laughed softly. "Besides, tonight is about celebrating the maternal healthcare initiatives. We are going to raise millions for the new clinics. I wouldn't let a single detail slip."

Before Elena could reply, the heavy oak door of the bedroom pushed open. Julian walked in, already dressed in a flawless black tuxedo, but his expression did not match the celebratory mood of the evening. His jaw was clenched, and his dark eyes were fixed on the encrypted smartphone in his hand.

"Julian?" Elena asked, her intuition instantly picking up on the sudden shift in his demeanor. "What's wrong?"

"I just received an alert from Vanguard-Vance’s primary cybersecurity division," Julian said, his voice low and tight. "Someone is aggressively shorting our stock through a decentralized offshore routing network. And they are using internal metadata to time their market strikes."

May you like

"Internal metadata?" Rosa frowned, stepping closer. "But the merger closed securely. Only top-level executives have access to those specific financial markers."

"Exactly," Julian said, looking up from his phone, his eyes meeting Elena's. "Someone on the inside is deliberately trying to bleed our market cap on the exact night of our biggest public charity event. The war isn't entirely over."
