Chapter 11

The war did not begin with a physical assault, but with a devastating, highly coordinated public relations bombing campaign. Three days after Julian’s confrontation in Palm Beach, a series of explosive, fabricated articles hit the major financial news networks simultaneously.
Elena was sitting in the nursery, gently rocking Clara to sleep, when her phone vibrated violently with dozens of emergency alerts.
She opened the screen to see the headline flashing in bold, red letters across a prominent financial blog: FRAUD IN THE FOUNDATION: Elena Vance Charity Investigated for Offshore Embezzlement.
Elena’s heart slammed against her ribs. She carefully placed a sleeping Clara into her crib, ensuring the baby monitor was active, and sprinted down the hallway to Julian's office. Rosa was already there, pacing frantically while shouting into a secure phone line.
"It's a complete fabrication!" Rosa yelled into the receiver. "The ledgers are completely transparent! Do not freeze the accounts!"
Rosa slammed the phone down, looking at Elena with wide, panicked eyes. "Sterling manufactured documents showing that our maternal healthcare grants were being routed to shadow accounts in the Caymans. The same accounts he controls! He framed the charity."
"The banks?" Elena asked, keeping her voice incredibly steady despite the panic rising in her throat.
"They panicked," Rosa choked out, tears of frustration welling in her eyes. "Two of our primary banking partners just froze the foundation's assets pending an internal audit. The clinics we were supposed to fund next week... they won't get the money, Elena. Women are going to lose their medical care."
Julian walked into the office, having heard the commotion. He looked at the news articles on the massive monitors, his jaw clenching so tightly it looked like it might shatter.
"Sterling is trying to destroy your reputation so the Vanguard-Vance board will force you to step down," Julian diagnosed immediately. "He is attacking the charity because he knows it is your heart."
"He thinks I will hide and cry," Elena said, her voice dropping to a low, absolute whisper. She walked over to Julian's desk and picked up the secure landline.

"Who are you calling?" Julian asked.
"The press," Elena replied, her eyes blazing with an unyielding fire. "If Alexander Sterling wants to play in the public arena, I am going to show him exactly why I am the CEO of this foundation. Set up a press conference for noon tomorrow, Rosa. We are going to expose him."
