Chapter 22

|

The highly anticipated Elena Vance Foundation Gala, previously interrupted by the shadow war, was rescheduled for a spectacular autumn evening in Manhattan. This time, it was held at the grand ballroom of the Pierre Hotel overlooking Central Park. There were no hidden threats, no looming financial disasters, and no enemies lurking in the shadows.

It was a night of pure, unadulterated triumph.

Elena walked down the grand staircase of the hotel, wearing a breathtaking emerald-green gown that caught the flash of hundreds of cameras. Julian walked beside her in a sharp tuxedo, radiating immense, undeniable pride. He kept his hand firmly on the small of her back, a constant, grounding presence.

Inside the ballroom, the atmosphere was electric. Politicians, philanthropists, and celebrities mingled with the dedicated doctors and nurses who would staff the newly funded maternal clinics.

Rosa stood at the main podium, looking completely comfortable and authoritative in her role as Executive Director.

"Tonight, we are not just celebrating a financial milestone," Rosa spoke passionately into the microphone, her voice carrying across the silent, attentive room. "We are celebrating the fundamental belief that every mother, regardless of her background or financial status, deserves to give birth with dignity, safety, and world-class medical care."

The room erupted into a standing ovation.

Julian leaned close to Elena as they applauded. "Look at her," he whispered, gesturing to Rosa. "She is a natural leader."

"She always was," Elena smiled, wiping a tear of joy from her eye. "She just needed a platform."

Later in the evening, after the millions of dollars in pledges had been counted and the champagne had flowed freely, Julian pulled Elena away from the crowded dance floor. He led her out onto a quiet, private balcony overlooking the glittering lights of Central Park.

The crisp autumn air was refreshing after the heat of the ballroom.

"Are you tired?" Julian asked, wrapping his tuxedo jacket around her bare shoulders to ward off the chill.

"I have never been less tired in my entire life," Elena answered, turning to face him. She rested her hands on his chest, feeling the steady, strong rhythm of his heart. "I am exactly where I am supposed to be."
