Chapter 8 - The Kidnapped Heir

The entire ballroom plunged back into an absolute, breathless silence.

Alejandro looked down at the marble floor, the memories clearly tearing him apart. "I was eight years old," he began, his voice a low, haunted rumble. "There was a kidnapping. The syndicate that took me left no ransom notes, no demands. They just wanted my father's empire to bleed. For three weeks, they held me in a rotting, abandoned safehouse on the very edge of the city. We had lost all hope."

I stared at him, trying to reconcile the terrifying, powerful man standing before me with a helpless, frightened child.

"Your mother was working as a triage nurse at an underground clinic nearby," Alejandro continued, refusing to look up. "One of my captors went there for medical supplies. She heard something strange. She heard my name. Instead of looking the other way, instead of protecting herself... she called the authorities and followed the men back to the safehouse to try and help me."

Mr. Lu picked up the story, his voice breaking with unspeakable grief. "When the tactical units breached the house, my son was alive purely because your mother had thrown herself over him during the crossfire. She took the bullets meant for Alejandro."

Tears streamed hot and fast down my cheeks. "No..."

"Before she passed away in the ambulance," Mr. Lu said, looking at me with nothing but deep, agonizing shame, "she asked me for only one thing."

"What?" I whispered.

"That I swear on my life to take care of her little girl."
