Chapter 2 - The Arrival of the Executioner

Alejandro Lu’s presence was an undeniable force of gravity. The moment he stepped over the grand threshold, the temperature in the sprawling ballroom seemed to physically plummet. He was dressed flawlessly in a bespoke, midnight-black tuxedo, his broad shoulders filling out the frame, his jaw tight and unforgiving. His dark, impenetrable eyes swept the room with a terrifying, predatory calm that made seasoned billionaires hold their breath.
His gaze moved slowly. He looked past the terrified, frozen guests. He looked past the silent musicians clutching their instruments. And then, his eyes landed directly on me.
He saw the dark, wet wine dripping from the ruined bodice of my dress. He saw my trembling hands. He saw the tears I was so desperately, agonizingly trying to hold back from falling down my cheeks. And then, slowly, deliberately, his gaze shifted to Valeria, who was still loosely holding the empty crystal flute.
"Mr. Lu..." I whispered. The words barely made it past my lips, but in the absolute silence of the hall, they sounded like a scream. "Please... save me."
I hated myself in that moment. I hated how fragile, how incredibly weak I sounded. I hated that I needed him to intervene. I had sworn to myself that I would survive his world on my own merits, that I would endure the psychological torture until they eventually accepted me. But I was drowning in a shark tank, and he was the only one who possessed the power to pull me out of the bloody water.
Alejandro did not blink. His expression remained a mask of flawless, chilling indifference. He began to walk slowly across the marble floor. The sharp, rhythmic click, clack of his polished leather shoes was the only sound in the cavernous space. Every step sounded like a ticking clock counting down to an execution.
Sensing the shift in the atmosphere, Valeria immediately changed her posture. The cruel, triumphant predator vanished in the blink of an eye, completely replaced by a distressed, deeply concerned, frantic friend. She practically sprinted toward Alejandro, her eyes wide with manufactured panic, her voice trembling perfectly.
"Alejandro! Oh, thank God you finally arrived!" Valeria cried out, reaching out to grasp his forearm. "It was absolutely awful! I didn't know what to do!"
Alejandro stopped. He looked down at her hand resting on his sleeve, and then up to her face, without an ounce of warmth or emotion. "What, exactly, was awful, Valeria?"
"Your wife," Valeria lied flawlessly, turning and pointing a perfectly manicured finger directly at my chest. "I was just trying to introduce her to the French Ambassador's wife, trying to help her integrate into our circles. But she suddenly lashed out! She insulted my family, she insulted the guests! She was screaming about how much she hated being here. I tried to calm her down, to soothe her, but she lunged at me, and the wine... it spilled everywhere!"
She squeezed his arm tighter, her voice dropping into a desperate plea. "Alejandro, I was only trying to protect the dignity of the Lu family. She is entirely out of control. She is humiliating you in front of the most important people in the city. You have to do something."
I closed my eyes, my heart shattering into a thousand irreparable pieces. This is it, I thought, the cold reality washing over me. He is going to apologize to her. He has to. Her father owns thirty percent of the supply chain. He will quietly ask his security guards to escort me out of the building to avoid further scandal. He will choose the business partner's daughter. He will choose the empire over the invisible wife.
"Is that what happened?" Alejandro’s voice was dangerously low, a smooth, rumbling baritone that offered absolutely no comfort to the woman clinging to him.
"Yes! Of course! You can ask anyone standing here!" Valeria gestured frantically to the crowd, and several sycophants, eager to side with the perceived winner, nodded eagerly in agreement. "We are all just trying to help her, Alejandro, to teach her, but she stubbornly refuses to learn our ways."
Alejandro slowly, methodically pulled his arm out of Valeria's desperate grasp. He did not look at her with the sympathetic warmth she so eagerly anticipated. Instead, he looked at her as if she were a piece of rotting garbage he had accidentally stepped on.
"If my wife were to truly defend herself," Alejandro said slowly, pronouncing every single syllable with a lethal, cutting precision that carried to the farthest corners of the room, "you wouldn't have a place left in this city to die."
The room collectively stopped breathing.
Valeria’s fake, glistening tears vanished instantly. The rich color drained entirely from her meticulously powdered face, leaving her pale, wide-eyed, and trembling. Her lips parted, but no sound came out. "Alexander... what... what on earth are you talking about?"
Alejandro ignored her completely. He bypassed her frozen form and walked straight toward the staircase where I stood shivering.
He stopped a few inches away from me. He didn't yell. He didn't demand an explanation. He didn't ask if I was okay. Instead, he reached up, unbuttoned his custom-made tuxedo jacket, and slipped it off his broad shoulders. Carefully, almost tenderly—a stark contrast to the violence in his eyes just moments before—he draped the heavy, warm fabric over my shoulders, pulling the lapels closed to entirely hide the humiliating crimson stain.
His fingers briefly, lightly brushed against my collarbone. "I'm sorry I'm late," he said softly, a private confession meant only for my ears.
Then, he turned to face the massive crowd, taking my trembling, icy hand and gripping it firmly, undeniably, in his own.
Valeria stared at us, her chest heaving with a mixture of shock and sheer, unadulterated fury. "Alejandro! What are you doing? Are you seriously going to stand there and defend her? After everything I've done for you? After everything my father has invested in your company to keep you at the top?"
"Defend her?" Alejandro echoed, his voice rising, bouncing off the vaulted ceilings. He took a slow, calculated step toward Valeria, pulling me gently with him. "You speak so proudly of what you have done for me. Let us talk, then, about what you have done to my wife."
"I haven't done anything but try to help her!" Valeria screamed, her elegant composure entirely broken, revealing the desperate, ugly truth underneath.
"Lies do not suit you, Valeria. They make you look desperate and remarkably unintelligent," Alejandro replied coldly. He didn't even look at her as he snapped his fingers in the air. "Victor. Now."
From the dark shadows of the entrance corridor, Alejandro’s lead assistant, Victor, stepped forward. He was holding a sleek, glowing digital tablet. He walked briskly and silently to the center of the room, standing beside his employer.

"I don't understand," Valeria stammered, taking a clumsy step backward, her eyes darting between Alejandro and the assistant. "What is this? What is going on?"
"This," Alejandro said, his eyes burning into hers with a terrifying intensity, "is the end of your pathetic little game."
