Chapter 17 - The Queen's Retribution

Valeria’s eyes widened in sheer horror. "Alejandro, you can't! You will lose millions! The board will never allow it!"

"The board," Alejandro said coldly, "will do exactly what my wife and I tell them to do. Because as of tonight, we hold the absolute majority."

He looked down at me, his eyes filled with a fierce, burning devotion. "I will burn this entire empire to the ground before I let anyone insult my wife again. I should have done this the very first time they looked at you wrong."

I didn't answer him. I couldn't grant him immediate forgiveness. The wounds were too deep, the lies too intricate. Perhaps one day, I could look at him and see the man I loved instead of the architect of my illusions. But tonight, I needed to stand on my own.
