Chapter 20 - The Grand Departure

With deliberate grace, I reached up and slipped Alejandro’s heavy tuxedo jacket off my shoulders. I let it fall to the polished marble floor with a soft thud. I didn't need his armor anymore. My ruined, wine-stained dress was my armor now. It was proof that I had survived their cruelty and emerged victorious.
I turned my back on my husband, my father-in-law, and the two hundred elite guests who had gathered to watch my execution.
I began to walk toward the massive grand exit.

The crowd parted violently, scrambling out of my way as if I were royalty. And in a way, I was. I walked with my head held high, the red envelope gripped securely in my hand, leaving the silent, utterly defeated ballroom behind me.
They were forced to stand there and watch the invisible woman walk out the door, knowing that when I returned, I would not be coming back as a wife. I would be coming back as a queen.
