Chapter 15 - The Judgment

I turned my gaze away from Mr. Lu and looked at my husband.

"Did you know?" I asked him quietly. "Did you know I had this power?"

Alejandro nodded slowly, his eyes filled with regret. "Yes."

"And yet you still let them treat me as if I were utterly useless?" I demanded, the sting of betrayal returning. "You let me stand in corners while they laughed at me?"

His face twisted with agony. "I thought protecting you meant keeping you away from the burden of that truth until you were ready. I thought if I shielded you quietly, you wouldn't have to face the darkness of this world."

"No, Alejandro," I told him, my voice firm and unwavering. "Protecting me means telling me the truth. It means giving me my own sword and letting me decide when to swing it."

He bowed his head, accepting the blow. He didn't look like my savior tonight. He looked like a man who had arrived far too late to a war I had already won.

Valeria, entirely desperate and completely unhinged, pointed a shaking finger at the screen. "This changes absolutely nothing! She is still a peasant! She still doesn't belong in our world!"
