I slowly turned my head and locked eyes with Valeria one final time. She was weeping silently, her makeup ruined, her social standing annihilated. She was nothing more than a ghost of the power she once pretended to wield.
"Look at me," I commanded her softly. "I am right here."
I then turned to look at Alejandro. He stood tall, terrifying to the rest of the world, but looking at me with the desperate vulnerability of a man begging for his life.
