Chapter 9 - The Shield|

Two weeks passed in a peaceful rhythm at the Sterling estate.
Elise spent her days reading in the sunroom, walking through the rose gardens, and slowly regaining her strength. Her color had returned, her blood pressure was normal, and her baby girl was kicking vibrantly every evening.
Julian, despite running a global financial empire, spent almost every evening at the estate. He would sit with her by the fireplace, working on his laptop while she sketched designs for her dream architectural projects.
One evening, as rain tapped softly against the sunroom glass, Elise looked up from her sketchbook.
"Julian?"
He immediately closed his laptop, giving her his full attention. "Yes, Elise?"
"Why did you really step in that night?" she asked softly. "A man in your position... helping a stranger creates a lot of noise. You’ve always avoided public drama."
Julian was quiet for a moment. He looked down at his hands, his gray eyes darkening with an old, buried memory.
"Eight years ago," Julian began softly, his voice thick with emotion, "my younger sister, Clara, was married to a man very much like Matthew. He was charming, wealthy, and cruel behind closed doors. She was pregnant with her first child when she tried to leave him."
Elise caught her breath. "What happened?"
"He cornered her in their home. They argued, she fell down the stairs... and we lost both of them," Julian whispered, a heavy tear shining in his eye. "I was in London on business. I wasn't there to protect her."
He looked up at Elise, his gaze holding hers with an intensity that made her heart skip a beat.
"When I saw you on that floor... when I saw the way Matthew stood there doing nothing... I swore to God I wouldn't let another innocent mother be destroyed."
Elise reached across the small tea table, placing her hand gently over his. "Julian... I am so sorry."
May you like
"Don't be," Julian murmured, flipping his hand to interlock his fingers with hers. "Because protecting you has brought life back into this house."
Suddenly, the harsh sound of raised voices echoed from the main driveway outside.
