Chapter 11 - The Arrival of Grace|

Two weeks later, at thirty-five weeks gestation, the heavy emotional stress of the past month finally caught up with Elise's body.
At three o'clock in the morning, a sudden, sharp contraction woke her from a deep sleep.
"Julian!" she called out, reaching for the bedside button.
Within ten seconds, Julian burst into her room, fully awake, wearing a dark sweater and trousers. "Elise? What's wrong?"
"My water broke," she gasped, clutching her abdomen as another powerful wave of pain washed over her. "The baby... she’s coming early!"
Julian didn't hesitate. He scooped her up into his arms, carrying her down the wide staircase to the waiting medical transport van parked at the entrance.
Twenty minutes later, in the state-of-the-art private delivery suite at Mount Sinai, the room was filled with the rhythmic sound of heart monitors and the focused commands of the medical team.
Elise lay on the bed, sweating, her hands gripping the sheets as another intense contraction hit.
"I can't do this!" she sobbed, panic rising in her chest. "It’s too early! What if she’s not ready?"
A warm, strong hand closed tightly around hers.
Julian stood beside her bed, wearing a surgical gown, his gray eyes locking onto hers with unwavering strength.
"Look at me, Elise," Julian commanded softly, brushing a damp strand of hair from her forehead. "You are the strongest woman I have ever met. Your daughter is strong because she is yours. I am right here. I'm not going anywhere."
Elise looked into his eyes, finding her anchor in the middle of the storm. She squeezed his hand with all her remaining strength, taking a deep, ragged breath.
"One more big push, Elise!" the doctor called out.
Elise squeezed Julian’s hand, gave everything she had left, and let out a breathless cry.
A second later, the sharp, beautiful, miraculous sound of a newborn baby crying filled the room.
"It’s a girl!" the doctor cheered, lifting the tiny, perfect baby. "Eight pounds, perfectly healthy!"
Elise collapsed back onto the pillows, weeping with pure, unadulterated joy. Julian looked down at the tiny baby, then looked at Elise, tears glittering in his own gray eyes for the first time in his adult life.

"Grace," Elise sobbed happily. "Her name is Grace."
