Chapter 20 - An Unwritten Horizon|

The morning sun broke over the Connecticut hills, washing away the night's storm and leaving the sky a brilliant, cloudless blue.

The birds sang in the rose gardens, and the fresh scent of pine and morning dew filled the warm air.

On the grand wraparound terrace overlooking the lake, Elise sat on a comfortable sofa, cradling tiny Grace in her arms. The baby was awake, her big, bright blue eyes staring up at the sunlight filtering through the leaves.

Footsteps sounded on the stone porch.

Julian walked out, wearing a simple white linen shirt and dark trousers, carrying two cups of coffee. He set the cups on the small table and sat down beside Elise.

He looked at Grace, gently stroking the baby’s soft cheek, then turned his eyes to Elise.

The quiet between them was full, warm, and rich with everything they had survived together.

"The police confirmed Matthew will be held without bail pending his trial for armed robbery and attempted assault," Julian said softly. "He won't ever come near this house again, Elise. You and Grace are completely, permanently safe."

Elise looked down at her daughter, then looked up into Julian’s deep gray eyes.

"Julian," she began, her voice soft and trembling with emotion. "Last night... before Matthew broke in... you said something to me."

Julian went still, his heart pounding in his chest. "I did."

"You said you loved me," Elise whispered, searching his face.

Julian took a deep, steady breath. He reached out, gently taking her hand in his, holding it flat over his heart so she could feel how fast it was beating.

"I meant every single word, Elise," Julian confessed softly. "I know you’ve been through hell. I know you need time to heal, to rebuild your life, and to figure out who you want to be. I don't expect anything from you."

He looked at her with a devotion so pure and fierce it made her breath catch.

"I just want to stand beside you," Julian murmured. "Whether as your protector, your friend, or... if you’ll ever have me... the man who loves you for the rest of your life. The choice will always be yours."

Elise looked down at his hand holding hers, then looked at tiny Grace, who cooed softly in her lap.

She looked up into Julian’s gray eyes—the eyes that had swept into her darkest hour, carried her out of the storm, and built a sanctuary of unconditional love around her and her child.

A slow, radiant, breathtaking smile spread across Elise’s face. She didn't give him an immediate answer in words. Instead, she leaned forward, resting her hand against his cheek, and gently pressed her lips to his.

The summer breeze swept through the blooming rose garden, carrying the warmth of the morning sun, as the story of their past ended—leaving the wide, beautiful horizon of their future completely unwritten.
