Chapter 12 - A Father's Shadow|

Three days later, the private maternity suite was filled with the sweet scent of white lilies and baby powder.
Elise sat in a comfortable armchair, holding tiny Grace bundled in a soft pink blanket. The baby was sleeping peacefully, her tiny fingers wrapped around Elise’s pinky finger.
Julian walked in, carrying a large shopping bag from an elite baby boutique. He set it down on the sofa, looking slightly embarrassed.
"What is all that?" Elise asked, a soft laugh breaking through her fatigue.
"Just... a few things," Julian murmured, pulling out a miniature cashmere sweater, hand-knitted booties, and a silver rattle engraved with the name Grace. "Marcus said babies need clothes."
"Julian, she’s three days old, not a fashion model," Elise giggled, her eyes shining with warmth.
Julian walked over, kneeling beside her chair, looking down at the sleeping infant with a look of profound, gentle devotion. He carefully reached out his index finger, and tiny Grace instinctively reached out, her miniature hand wrapping around his finger.
Julian’s breath hitched in his throat. A soft, genuine smile spread across his face—a smile so warm and bright that it transformed his sharp features completely.
"She likes you," Elise whispered softly, watching the two of them.
"I like her too," Julian murmured, looking up at Elise. "I like both of you. More than I know how to explain."
Before Elise could answer, her attorney, David Boies, stepped quietly into the suite holding a leather briefcase.
"Good morning, Elise. Mr. Sterling," David greeted respectfully. "I have news regarding the divorce proceedings."
Elise’s expression grew serious. "Is Matthew contesting?"

"Matthew Hayes has officially surrendered all parental rights in exchange for dropping the civil embezzlement charges," David reported. "He signed the final decree this morning. You have sole legal and physical custody of Grace. You are officially a free woman, Elise."
Elise closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering sigh of relief. The nightmare was finally, completely over.
