Chapter 1 - The Voice of Command|

The single word did not slice through the room; it crushed it.

It was a low, resonant baritone that carried the absolute weight of a man accustomed to obeying no one and being obeyed by everyone.

The crowd parted like cold water.

Through the corridor of frozen guests walked Julian Sterling. At thirty-six, he was a legend in the financial world—a reclusive titan who owned more of Manhattan than the city itself did. He wore a dark tailored suit without a flaw, his gray eyes fixed on the bloody scene on the Persian rug.

Saraphina froze, her red Louboutin heel hovering an inch above the floor. The cruel smirk on her face evaporated into sudden, rigid panic.

"Mr... Mr. Sterling," Saraphina stammered, pulling her foot back as if the floor had caught fire. "This... this woman was being hysterical—"

Julian didn't even look at her. He walked past her as if she were made of air.

He dropped to one knee beside Elise. His movements were swift, precise, and devoid of hesitation. He took off his heavy velvet tuxedo jacket and wrapped it gently around Elise’s trembling, silk-clad shoulders.

"Don't move," Julian said softly. His voice, once cold enough to command armies, turned surprisingly gentle as he looked into Elise’s tear-filled eyes. "Help is already coming."

Elise clutched his lapels, her knuckles white, her breath coming in ragged, agonized gasps. "My baby... please... save my baby..."

"I've got you," Julian murmured, sliding his strong arms beneath her shoulders and knees. He lifted her effortlessly from the cold marble, cradling her against his chest as if she were made of priceless glass.

Matthew Hayes finally found his voice, stepping forward with his hands out. "Wait! Sterling, what are you doing? That’s my wife!"

Julian stopped. He turned his head slowly, his steel-gray eyes locking onto Matthew with a look of such terrifying contempt that the younger CEO took an involuntary step back.

"She was your wife until you stood there and watched her bleed," Julian said, his tone dropping an octave into pure ice. "If you step one inch closer to her, Matthew, I will destroy everything you have ever built before the sun rises."
