Chapter 17 - Shadows of Truth|

By midnight, the gala guests had departed, leaving the estate quiet and peaceful under the starlit sky.
In the nursery upstairs, tiny Grace was sleeping soundly in her hand-carved wooden crib, her miniature blanket tucked neatly around her shoulders.
Elise stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of the sunroom, looking out at the rose garden glowing under the moonlight. She held a cup of chamomile tea, feeling a deep, profound sense of peace.
Footsteps echoed softly on the hardwood floor.
Julian stepped into the room, having taken off his tuxedo jacket and unbuttoned his collar. He walked over, standing beside her, looking out at the gardens.
"Are you tired?" Julian asked softly.
"No," Elise smiled, looking at him. "Just happy. Really, truly happy."
Julian was quiet for a moment. He looked down at his reflection in the glass, his expression turning thoughtful.
"Elise," Julian began softly. "There’s something I need to tell you. Something I haven't told anyone."
Elise turned her full attention to him. "What is it, Julian?"
Julian took a deep breath, looking directly into her eyes. "The night of the gala... six months ago... I didn't just happen to be standing near you by accident."
Elise blinked, puzzled. "What do you mean?"
"I was planning to buy Hayes Dynamics that month," Julian revealed softly. "I had been researching Matthew’s company for three weeks. I knew he was embezzling money, and I knew he was treating his company like a playground. But when I saw you walk into that ballroom in that blue silk dress... holding your stomach with such quiet dignity..."

He reached out, his fingers gently brushing a strand of hair behind her ear.
"I saw a woman who was fighting so hard to hold her world together," Julian murmured, his voice thick with emotion. "And when he let that woman push you... something inside me snapped. It wasn't just about stopping a crime, Elise. It was about saving you."
