Chapter 7 - The High Society Facade

|

The dinner with Daniel’s board of directors was held at one of the most exclusive country clubs in the city.

I wore the red dress, a stunning, form-fitting designer piece that always made Daniel proud to show me off. I played the role of the perfect, supportive corporate wife flawlessly. I laughed at the chairman’s terrible jokes. I charmed the investors. I held Daniel’s hand under the table, making sure everyone saw the image of a perfectly unified, powerful couple.

Daniel squeezed my fingers, looking at me with absolute relief. He thought the storm had passed. He thought his fifty-thousand-dollar confession had saved his marriage.

Little did he know, Mark and I were already setting the board for his execution.

Midway through the dinner, my phone buzzed in my clutch.

I excused myself to the powder room and locked the door behind me. I opened the message. It was from Mark.

The usual spot is a penthouse suite at the Grand Continental. Booked under a shell company Daniel owns. Thursday at 8 PM. I have eyes on the lobby.

I texted back: Don't move until I give the signal. We need them in the room together.

I washed my hands, staring at my reflection in the gilded mirror. I didn't look like a victim. I looked dangerous.

When I returned to the table, Daniel leaned in and kissed my cheek.

“You’re quiet tonight,” he murmured.

“Just thinking about the upcoming charity gala,” I lied smoothly. “It’s going to be a big night for the company.”

“It is,” Daniel agreed proudly. “We’re announcing the new downtown acquisition. The press will be everywhere.”

“I know,” I smiled, taking a sip of my wine.

The charity gala was scheduled for Friday, the day after their planned rendezvous. It was the perfect stage. Daniel loved his public image more than anything else in the world. He loved being the golden boy of the real estate market.

I was going to take everything from him. Not just his marriage. Not just his money. I was going to take his reputation, and I was going to let Mark take the rest.

Thursday arrived with agonizing slowness.

I told Daniel I was spending the evening at a spa retreat with some friends. He kissed me goodbye at the door, telling me he had to work late at the office to finalize the gala preparations.

“Don't work too hard,” I told him, adjusting his tie.

“I’ll try,” he lied effortlessly.

The moment his car pulled out of the driveway, I grabbed my coat and headed for the city. It was time to spring the trap.
