Chapter 12 - The Microphone

|

The crowd parted for me automatically. Nobody whispered; they simply stared in shock as I ascended the stairs and walked directly to the podium.

Daniel stumbled backward, looking like a man facing a firing squad.

I stepped up to the microphone, adjusting it calmly. I looked out over the sea of horrified faces. I saw the chairman of the board staring at Daniel with pure, unadulterated rage. Investors don't like scandals, and they especially don't like CEOs who misuse corporate funds for infidelity.

“Good evening, everyone,” I said, my voice echoing clearly through the massive ballroom. “I apologize for the interruption to the scheduled programming.”

I turned slightly, gesturing to the massive screens behind me.

“As you can see, my husband and my sister have been conducting a rather aggressive merger of their own over the past six months.”

A few nervous, uncomfortable chuckles rippled through the back of the room, quickly silenced by the gravity of the situation.

“Daniel likes to talk about integrity,” I continued, my voice steady and cold as ice. “But the truth is, the fifty thousand dollars he used to fund his affair was pulled directly from a corporate consulting slush fund.”

The chairman of the board stood up abruptly, his face turning purple. “Is this true, Daniel?!”

Daniel opened his mouth, but no sound came out. He was completely paralyzed by the sheer magnitude of the destruction.

“It is entirely true,” I answered for him. “The financial documents have already been forwarded to the SEC, along with the internal auditors of this firm.”

I turned to look at my mother, who was hyperventilating near the front table.

“My family knew about this,” I stated loudly, ensuring every person in her social circle heard me. “My mother covered for them. She protected the affair to protect her own access to Daniel’s wealth. So, when you look at them tonight, remember exactly who they are.”

I stepped away from the podium.

I walked over to Daniel, who was shaking violently, tears finally spilling down his cheeks.

“You wanted to be the powerful savior, Daniel,” I whispered so only he could hear. “Now, save yourself.”

I didn't wait for his response. I turned and walked down the stage steps, head held high, my black gown sweeping behind me.

As I walked down the center aisle of the ballroom, Mark detached himself from the shadows. He fell into step beside me, acting as an imposing, silent bodyguard, ensuring no one dared to stop me.

We walked out of the ballroom, leaving Daniel to the wolves of the corporate board.

The high-society execution was flawless.
