Chapter 1 - The Picture Perfect Lie

|

The photographer’s flash blinded me for a fraction of a second, but the afterimage burned itself permanently into my mind.

My younger sister, Ashley, was still perched on my husband’s lap. Her smile, brilliant and perfectly practiced, faltered the moment Daniel spoke those words.

“Ashley,” Daniel said slowly, his voice cutting through the forced holiday cheer of the room. “You told me you and Mark were separated.”

I turned toward my husband, my heart hammering a sudden, violent rhythm against my ribs.

“What?” I asked.

Ashley went completely pale. The smug, victorious glint in her eyes vanished, replaced instantly by the panicked look of a cornered animal. She scrambled off Daniel’s lap, smoothing down her expensive red silk dress with trembling hands.

“Daniel, you misunderstood,” Ashley stammered, her voice dropping to a frantic whisper.

“I didn’t misunderstand anything,” Daniel replied, standing up. He wasn’t looking at me. He was staring at Ashley with a mixture of betrayal and sudden, terrifying realization. “You sat in my office three weeks ago sobbing. You told me Mark had moved out. You said he cut off your credit cards and locked you out of the accounts.”

The room, which had been buzzing with my mother’s attempts to force everyone into a festive mood, went dead silent.

My cousin lowered his drink. My aunt stepped back into the shadows of the hallway.

“Ashley?” my mother said, stepping forward, her hands fluttering nervously. “What is Daniel talking about?”

I didn't wait for her to answer. I looked at Daniel, putting the pieces together in real time.

“She came to your office?” I asked, my voice dangerously calm.

“Claire, let me explain,” Daniel said, finally turning to look at me. The guilt radiating off him was palpable.

“Did you give her money, Daniel?” I pressed, ignoring his plea.

Ashley let out a sharp, breathless gasp. “Claire, stop it! You’re ruining Christmas!”

“I am going to ask you one more time,” I said, stepping directly into my husband’s personal space. “Did you give my sister money because she told you she was leaving her husband?”

Daniel swallowed hard. He looked at Ashley, then back at me.

“She said she needed fifty thousand dollars for a retainer for a divorce attorney,” Daniel confessed, his voice barely a whisper. “She said Mark was going to destroy her if she didn't strike first.”

I let out a harsh, bitter laugh. Mark was a notoriously ruthless man with deep, terrifying connections in the city’s underground. But he hadn't left her.

“Mark drove her here tonight, Daniel,” I said softly.

Ashley covered her face with her hands. The joke was over, and the nightmare was just beginning.
