Chapter 11 - The Gala Unravels

|

The time had finally come.

The lights in the grand ballroom dimmed, and a spotlight hit the main stage. The chairman of Daniel’s real estate firm gave a brief, glowing introduction, praising Daniel’s leadership, his vision, and his unwavering commitment to the company's integrity.

Every word felt like a perfectly timed punchline to a very dark joke.

Daniel walked up to the podium. He looked sick. His usual charismatic, commanding presence was completely gone. He gripped the edges of the podium so tightly his knuckles were white. He read his speech from the teleprompter with a rigid, robotic cadence.

I stood near the front of the stage, sipping my champagne, maintaining my flawless, supportive smile.

Mark stood in the shadows near the back of the room, leaning against a marble pillar, watching the spectacle with dark, calculating eyes.

“...and so, it is my great honor to announce the acquisition of the downtown Harbor Project,” Daniel concluded, his voice shaking slightly. “Thank you all for your continued support.”

The ballroom erupted in polite applause.

Daniel forced a smile and began to step away from the podium.

But he didn't get far.

The massive digital screens flanking the stage, which had been displaying the company logo, suddenly flickered.

The logo vanished.

In its place, massive, high-definition photographs appeared.

The entire ballroom gasped in unison.

The photos weren't of the new real estate acquisition. They were the security camera stills I had obtained from Mark’s contacts. High-quality images of Daniel and Ashley walking into the Grand Continental Hotel. Photos of them kissing in the private elevator.

And then, the coup de grâce.

An audio file began playing over the massive sound system. It was a recording I had taken on my phone the night I found the burner device. I had used an app to read the texts out loud in a synthesized voice, displaying the text thread on the screens simultaneously.

“The Christmas photo was too close. She suspected something.”

“I handled it. I gave her the bank statements for the 50k. She thinks that’s all it was. A loan.”

The ballroom was plunged into a horrifying, absolute silence.

Daniel stood frozen on the stage, the blood completely draining from his face. He looked out at the sea of shocked investors, board members, and elite socialites. His entire reputation, his career, his carefully curated life, was being incinerated in real time.

My mother dropped her champagne glass. It shattered against the marble floor, the sharp sound cutting through the stunned silence.

“Claire!” she shrieked, horrified, looking at me. “What have you done?!”

I didn't look at her. I walked calmly toward the stairs leading up to the stage.
