Chapter 4 - The Dangerous Alliance

|

Mark wasn’t just a wealthy businessman; he was a phantom in the city’s elite circles.

His family had deep, unspoken roots in the underground. He was the kind of man who commanded rooms without raising his voice, whose enemies frequently found themselves facing sudden, catastrophic audits or worse. When Ashley married him, my mother had been thrilled by the wealth. I had been terrified of the power.

We met at an exclusive, dimly lit speakeasy hidden beneath a restaurant in the financial district.

Mark was already sitting in a leather booth in the back, nursing a glass of scotch. He wore a dark, tailored suit that emphasized his broad shoulders. His dark eyes locked onto me as I approached.

“You don’t call unless someone is dying or someone is lying,” Mark said, gesturing for me to sit.

“Let’s go with the latter,” I replied, sliding into the booth.

“What did my wife do now?” he sighed, taking a slow sip of his drink.

“She told my husband you were physically abusing her, and that you were separated.”

Mark’s hand froze mid-air. The glass hovered inches from the table. Slowly, he set it down. The shift in his demeanor was instantaneous and terrifying. The polite brother-in-law vanished, replaced by the apex predator of the city’s shadows.

“Excuse me?” Mark whispered, his voice dangerously low.

“Three weeks ago, Ashley went to Daniel crying,” I explained, maintaining direct eye contact. “She showed him bruises. She said you cut off her access to money and she needed fifty thousand dollars for a divorce attorney to escape you.”

Mark’s jaw clenched so hard I thought his teeth might shatter.

“I have never laid a hand on her in my life,” Mark stated, the anger vibrating in his chest. “And her accounts are fully funded.”

“I know,” I said calmly. “The bruises were from her cosmetic fillers. She played him, Mark.”

Mark leaned back against the leather, his dark eyes calculating. “Why are you telling me this, Claire? You could have just handled your husband privately.”

“Because fifty thousand dollars was just the beginning,” I said, sliding a manila envelope across the table.

Mark opened the envelope, pulling out the printed bank statements and the itinerary for the Aspen chalet.

He stared at the papers for a long time. The silence in the booth was deafening.

“She didn’t just steal your money,” Mark finally said, looking up at me. His eyes were completely void of emotion. “She slept with your husband.”

“Yes.”

“What do you want, Claire?”

“I want to burn them both to the ground,” I said without hesitation. “And I need your help to do it.”
