Chapter 6 - The Burner Phone

|

When I returned to my own estate, the house was eerily silent. Daniel’s car was in the driveway, but he was nowhere to be found on the main floor.

I walked upstairs, my heels clicking softly against the hardwood. The door to his private home office was slightly ajar. I pushed it open.

Daniel wasn't inside, but his leather briefcase was resting on the desk, the brass clasps undone.

I hesitated for only a fraction of a second. I had already crossed the line into espionage; there was no point in pretending to respect his privacy now.

I opened the briefcase and began sifting through the files. Mostly boring commercial real estate contracts, quarterly projections, and tax documents.

But tucked into a zippered side pocket was a small, sleek, black cell phone. A burner.

My heart hammered in my throat. I picked it up. It wasn't locked with a passcode, which was the ultimate sign of a man who believed he was too smart to get caught.

I opened the messaging app. There was only one contact listed, saved simply as 'A'.

The messages were a nauseating timeline of deception.

A: The Christmas photo was too close. She suspected something. I could see it in her eyes.

Daniel: I handled it. I gave her the bank statements for the 50k. She thinks that’s all it was. A loan.

A: Are you sure? If Mark finds out about Aspen, he will literally kill me.

Daniel: Relax. She bought the story. Just keep your distance for a while. We’ll meet at the usual spot next Thursday.

I stared at the glowing screen, my hands shaking with a terrifying, cold rage. He was managing me. He thought he had outsmarted me with a partial truth to cover up the ultimate betrayal.

I took out my own phone and quickly photographed the entire text thread. Every dirty, deceitful word.

Then, I carefully placed the burner phone exactly where I had found it, zipped the pocket, and stepped out of the office just as I heard Daniel’s footsteps coming up the stairs.

“Claire?” he called out, seeing me in the hallway.

“Just coming up to change,” I lied effortlessly, offering him a perfectly crafted, empty smile. “Are we still on for dinner with the board members tonight?”

Daniel visibly relaxed, letting out a breath he had clearly been holding.

“Yes, of course,” he smiled back, completely unaware that he was looking at the woman who was going to dismantle his entire life.

“Perfect,” I said. “I’ll wear the red dress.”
