Chapter 14 - The Debt

|

“You’ve gotten everything you wanted, Claire,” Mark said, setting his empty espresso cup down. The casual, conversational tone vanished, replaced by the serious, calculating demeanor of a syndicate boss.

“I have,” I agreed, my guard instantly rising.

“My family provided the security footage from the Grand Continental,” Mark noted, leaning back in his chair. “We provided the access to the hotel. We intimidated the board members to ensure Daniel’s termination was immediate and absolute.”

“I’m aware of your contributions, Mark. And I’m grateful.”

“Gratitude doesn't balance ledgers in my world, Claire,” Mark stated coldly.

My heart skipped a beat. I had known this moment was coming. You don't use a powerful, dangerous man to destroy your enemies without owing him a favor in return.

“What do you want, Mark?” I asked, keeping my voice steady.

“Daniel’s former real estate firm is currently in a state of chaos,” Mark explained, his dark eyes locking onto mine. “The board is panicking. Stock prices are dropping. They need stability, and they need a massive influx of clean capital to survive the upcoming SEC fines.”

“And you want to provide that capital.”

“I want to buy the firm,” Mark corrected. “My family needs legitimate, high-level commercial real estate assets to... diversify our portfolio.”

It was money laundering on a massive corporate scale.

“I don't own the firm, Mark. I can't sell it to you.”

“No. But you own the voting shares Daniel was forced to transfer to you in the divorce settlement,” Mark smiled, a predator showing his teeth. “You have a seat at the table now, Claire. I need you to vote in favor of the acquisition when my proxy company makes the bid next week. And I need you to convince the board that my offer is their only salvation.”

I stared at him. If I did this, I was crossing a line from a scorned wife seeking revenge into an active participant in an organized crime syndicate’s corporate takeover.

“If I do this,” I said slowly, “the debt is paid in full. You and your family never contact me again.”

“You have my word,” Mark promised. “You vote yes, and you walk away entirely clean, living peacefully in your massive estate.”

I looked out the window of the cafe. I thought about Daniel’s arrogance. I thought about Ashley’s smug smile when she sat on his lap. I thought about my mother defending the betrayal to protect her own status.

They had all played dirty. It was time I finished the game.

“Send me the proposal documents,” I said, turning back to Mark. “I’ll secure the board’s votes.”
