Chapter 17 - The Aftermath of Silence

|

I walked away from the front door, leaving Ashley sobbing on the porch.

I didn't feel guilty. I felt absolutely nothing. The empathy I had spent my entire life extending to my toxic family had been completely, permanently burned out of me.

I went back to the living room, picked up my glass of wine, and sat down to read my book. Ten minutes later, I heard the sound of her cheap car starting up and pulling out of my driveway.

That was the last time I ever saw my sister.

A week later, I saw a small article buried on the fifth page of the local newspaper. A tragic, single-car accident on a dark, winding road outside the city limits. The driver, Ashley Vance, had reportedly lost control of her vehicle and crashed into a concrete ravine. The car had caught fire. There were no witnesses.

I folded the newspaper neatly and placed it in the recycling bin.

Mark had tied up his loose ends.

Life moved forward with a beautiful, ruthless efficiency. Without the dead weight of my husband or my manipulative family dragging me down, I thrived. I invested my massive divorce settlement wisely, doubling my wealth within a year. I traveled to Europe, drank wine in Tuscany, and lived precisely the way I wanted to.

Daniel, on the other hand, sank further into ruin. The SEC investigation concluded with massive fines that bankrupted him completely. He avoided jail time by cooperating with the federal authorities, but he was permanently barred from holding any executive positions. I heard through the grapevine that he was managing a mid-tier car rental agency in a strip mall in Ohio.

It was a pathetic, fitting end for a man who thought he could play god.

My mother tried to contact me exactly once. She sent a desperate, weeping letter begging for financial assistance, claiming the scandal had ruined her health and her social standing.

I returned the letter to sender, unopened.

I had built a fortress around my life, completely impenetrable to the people who had tried to destroy me. I was the master of my own universe.

Until a cold, rainy evening in late November, almost exactly a year after the Christmas photo that started it all.
