Chapter 9 - The Stolen Deed

Mr. Henderson closed the first folder and immediately pushed a second, thinner file toward me. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird.
"There are also previous, very aggressive requests to transfer your property ownership documents," the officer explained, tapping the file with his pen. "Someone submitted paperwork to legally add a co-owner to the Atlanta deed. We noticed massive inconsistencies with your previous verified signatures, which is why we placed a temporary hold on the account and contacted you last night."
For the first time since the disastrous dinner, every single disjointed piece of the puzzle began connecting in my mind with terrifying clarity.
The request for the physical deed three days ago. Luke claiming it was just for a "routine bank procedure." Brenda’s incredibly arrogant statement about the apartment belonging to Chloe soon. Their sudden, intense interest in my financial records over the past month.
They weren’t just trying to borrow money against my asset to fund Chloe's lavish lifestyle.
They were trying to completely erase my ownership. They were orchestrating a massive, coordinated legal theft to strip me of my most valuable asset and leave me holding a two-million-dollar bag of debt.

"Ms. Ross, we are going to freeze this application immediately," Mr. Henderson said gently, seeing the absolute shock on my face. "But you need to understand that this constitutes felony wire fraud and grand theft. You need to involve law enforcement and legal counsel immediately."
"Do it," I whispered, staring blindly at the forged papers. "Freeze everything. Don't let a single cent move."
