Chapter 4 - The Atlanta Apartment

Brenda took two aggressive steps toward me, closing the distance until she was practically breathing down my neck. Her face was flushed with anger, her jaw set in a hard, cruel line.
"Listen to me very carefully," Brenda hissed, pointing a sharp, manicured finger at my chest. "Just because you make your little bit of money sitting in front of a computer all day does not mean you are better than us. You live under our roof right now. You are part of this family, and in this family, women pull their weight."
The sheer audacity of her statement made my blood boil. "Under your roof?" I shot back. "I paid for a massive portion of this home's kitchen renovation! I covered your husband’s medical deductible out of my own pocket!"
Brenda waved away my facts as if swatting an annoying fly.
"That is what family does," she sneered. Then, a wicked, triumphant smirk spread across her face. "And speaking of doing things for family... that luxury apartment you own down in Atlanta? It will belong to Chloe someday soon anyway. She and Oscar are planning to have another child, and they desperately need more space."
I felt the hardwood floor literally shift beneath my feet. My heart hammered violently against my ribs. The beautiful, two-bedroom apartment in Atlanta was my sanctuary—a property I had purchased entirely on my own before I ever met Luke. It was my hard-earned safety net.
"That apartment?" I repeated, my voice barely a whisper. I looked at Chloe.
Chloe quickly looked down at her expensive shoes, suddenly finding the floorboards incredibly interesting.
"We’re family, Hannah," Brenda said, crossing her arms in a display of absolute authority. "Don’t keep score over everything. It’s selfish and it’s tacky."

I turned my head slowly toward the living room, locking eyes with my husband.
"You knew about this?" I demanded.
