Chapter 11 - Gaslighting 101

"Hannah, where are you?" Luke’s voice was smooth, completely devoid of the guilt he should have been drowning in. "Mom is still furious. You really need to come over here and fix this mess you made."
I looked at Maya, who silently mouthed a string of obscenities.
"I'm looking at my bank statements, Luke," I replied, my voice dangerously calm. "I'm looking at the joint account you opened without my consent. I'm looking at the money you stole from my business. I'm looking at the forged signature on a $2.2 million loan application."
There was a long, heavy silence on the other end of the line. I could hear the faint sound of a television playing in the background at his mother's house.
"Hannah, you’re overreacting," Luke finally sighed, deploying his favorite weapon of mass manipulation. "My family was just trying to help everyone out. Chloe needs financial stability for the new baby, and you have more money than you need. I was going to tell you about the loan once the approval went through."
"By committing felony fraud? By using my name and stealing my property?"
Another pause. Then his voice changed, growing cold and condescending.
"You’re making this way bigger than it actually is, Hannah. It's just moving some assets around for the family. Don't be dramatic."
I almost laughed out loud. That was always his ultimate answer. The disrespect. The stolen money. The emotional abuse. Everything was small and insignificant when it happened to me. But everything was of vital, monumental importance when it benefited them.

"You're right, Luke," I whispered. "It is just assets."
I hung up the phone and blocked his number.
