Chapter 13 - The Anonymous Message

|
I picked up the phone, expecting another frantic update from my lawyer or a wellness check from Maya. Instead, a text message from an entirely unknown number illuminated the screen.
"I know exactly what Luke and Brenda did to your accounts. I have the paper trail. I have the proof. Meet me alone tonight at 8 PM if you want the real truth behind the money."
I stared at the glowing screen, my heart pounding loudly in my ears.
I had expected lies from the Carter family. I had expected unimaginable betrayal and financial ruin. But I had never, in my wildest dreams, expected that someone hidden in the shadows of their own family had been quietly watching everything unfold.
My fingers flew across the keyboard. "Who is this?"
The reply came three seconds later. "Don't bring anyone. 5th Street Diner. Back booth. Come alone."
I debated showing the message to Maya or calling the police. It could easily be a trap orchestrated by Luke to corner me and force me to sign the actual documents. But the mention of the "paper trail" hooked me. If they had physical evidence of the fraud, it would save me months of agonizing legal battles and secure their immediate arrest.

"I'll be there," I texted back.
