Chapter 12 - Packing Boxes

The next day, I needed to see it with my own eyes. I needed to witness the sheer depth of their delusion. I borrowed Maya’s nondescript gray sedan and drove slowly past Brenda’s sprawling house in the suburbs.
I parked down the street, hidden in the shadows of a large oak tree, and watched through the windshield.
Chloe’s luxury SUV was parked directly in the driveway with the trunk wide open. Through the massive front windows of the house, I could clearly see a mountain of brown cardboard moving boxes stacked high in the living room. Oscar was carrying a heavy box out to the car, wiping sweat from his forehead. Chloe was holding a clipboard, bossing him around with a massive, arrogant smile on her face.
They were packing.
They were actually preparing to move. They fully believed the forged loan had gone through, that the deed was successfully transferred, and that they were moving into my beautiful Atlanta apartment by the end of the week.
A sick feeling twisted in my stomach. They were so incredibly confident in my ultimate submission that they hadn't even waited for the final bank confirmation. They assumed I would just roll over and cry while they stole my life's work.

But before I could pull out of the parking spot, my phone buzzed violently in the cupholder.
