Chapter 18 - Welcome to Atlanta

|

At exactly 2:00 PM on Saturday, a massive, rented moving truck pulled up to the loading dock of my Atlanta high-rise. Chloe’s luxury SUV parked right behind it.

I watched through binoculars as Brenda, Chloe, Oscar, and Luke stepped out into the Georgia heat. They were all smiling, laughing, completely oblivious to the doom waiting for them. Brenda was pointing up at the penthouse levels, acting as if she had built the skyscraper with her own bare hands.

"Showtime," Marcus whispered, opening his car door.

We walked into the building through the side entrance, meeting two plainclothes detectives in the lobby. We rode the service elevator up to my floor in absolute silence.

When the doors chimed open, we heard them down the hall. Oscar was struggling to insert the forged keycard they had bullied the leasing office into printing using the fake deed.

"Just force it, Oscar!" Brenda snapped impatiently. "This is our property now. We shouldn't have to deal with this."

The lock clicked, flashing a green light. The door swung open, and they all flooded into the beautiful, sunlit living room of my apartment.

"Oh, it's perfect!" Chloe squealed, dropping her designer purse on my expensive kitchen counter.

I stepped out from the hallway, followed closely by Marcus and the two detectives.

"I'm glad you like it, Chloe," I said loudly. "But you're trespassing."

They all spun around simultaneously. The color instantly drained from Luke's face. Brenda’s jaw hit the floor, her eyes darting frantically from me, to the police, and finally landing on the ghost she thought she had buried ten years ago.

"Hello, Mother," Marcus smiled.
