Chapter 32 - The Graduation Ceremony

|
Grace graduated on a bright, cloudless day in late May.
The university stadium was packed with thousands of proud parents, cheering friends, and students wearing dark green robes.
Daniel and I sat in the middle tier of the bleachers. We did not bring a massive, flashy sign. We did not bring air horns. We brought a single, beautiful bouquet of white roses and our undivided attention.
When the dean of the health sciences department called Grace’s name, she walked across the massive stage. She looked radiant, her hair falling naturally over her shoulders, her smile bright and completely unforced.
She reached out, shook the dean's hand, and accepted her leather-bound diploma.
There was no camera shoved into her face demanding a reaction. There was no aunt screaming directions from the sidelines. There was no sponsor logo plastered across her achievement.
It was entirely, unequivocally hers.
Daniel cheered loudly, his deep voice carrying over the crowd. I clapped until my hands ached, tears of profound, unadulterated pride spilling hot down my cheeks.
After the ceremony, we met her on the campus quad. She threw her arms around my neck in a crushing hug.
"I did it, Mom," she laughed, the heavy green robe slipping slightly off her shoulder.
"You absolutely did, sweetheart," I told her, kissing her warm cheek. "I am so incredibly proud of you."
Daniel handed her the white roses, pulling her into a fierce embrace.
We took exactly three photographs. I took one of Grace and Daniel. Daniel took one of Grace and me. And a passing student took one of the three of us together.
Grace looked at the photos on my phone. She smiled, nodding her approval.

"Those are perfect," she said.
We walked toward the parking lot, laughing and talking about our dinner reservations. The heavy, dark reality of the past felt completely severed, replaced by a bright, unwritten future stretching beautifully before us.
