Chapter 21 - The Clinical Observation

|
In her junior year, Grace began her clinical observation hours.
She was assigned to a pediatric rehabilitation center in the city. Her job was to shadow licensed occupational therapists as they worked with children recovering from surgeries, accidents, or developmental delays.
On her third week, she observed a session with a seven-year-old girl recovering from a severe wrist fracture. The therapist was trying to guide the girl through a painful stretching exercise.
The girl’s mother was in the room. She was holding a smartphone, actively streaming the session to a social media platform.
"Come on, sweetie, look at the camera and show everyone how brave you are!" the mother coaxed brightly. "We need to hit our step goal for today’s vlog!"
The little girl winced, turning her face away from the lens. "Mom, it hurts. Stop."
"Just one more minute, baby. Tell your fans you're a warrior!"
Grace stood in the corner of the room, holding a clipboard. Her knuckles turned white. The fluorescent lights of the clinic suddenly felt entirely too bright. She recognized the forced, high-pitched tone of the mother. She recognized the shrinking posture of the child.
The licensed therapist hesitated, clearly uncomfortable, but said nothing, not wanting to upset a client.
Grace stepped forward.
She did not shout. She did not snatch the phone.
She stood directly between the camera’s lens and the little girl.
"Excuse me, ma'am," Grace said. Her voice was incredibly calm, coated in absolute professional authority. "Facility policy prohibits recording in the therapy rooms without written administrative consent, to protect the privacy of all patients."
The mother lowered the phone, frowning. "It’s my daughter. My followers have been following her recovery journey."
"The policy protects your daughter as well," Grace replied smoothly. "Therapy requires a safe, distraction-free environment. Please put the phone away, or we will have to suspend today’s session."
The licensed therapist finally found her voice and nodded in agreement.
The mother huffed, but she slipped the phone into her purse.

The little girl looked at Grace. Her shoulders dropped, the tension leaving her small frame.
Grace offered the girl a small, understanding smile, then stepped back into the corner.
