Chapter 19 - The Digital Ghost

|

The internet does not forget easily, but it can be managed.

We had employed aggressive firms to scrub the raw, abusive footage of Clover House Kids from the accessible web. Search engines were monitored. Takedown notices were automated.

But fragments always survived in the deep, quiet corners of digital archives.

During her sophomore year, Grace encountered a ghost.

She was sitting in a campus coffee shop with a study group. A classmate, a young man who had spent too much time on obscure internet forums, kept staring at her.

"You know," the classmate said suddenly. "You look exactly like that girl from that old family vlog channel. The one that got shut down because of the lawsuit."

The table went silent.

Grace did not drop her pen. She did not freeze.

She looked directly at the young man.

"I am," Grace said.

The classmate leaned forward, a voyeuristic gleam in his eye. "Whoa. Seriously? I read a thread about that. Is it true your aunt made you do all those crazy stunts? Did you really sue your own grandparents?"

Maya, who was sitting next to Grace, began to pack up her books, sensing the intrusion.

Grace placed a hand on Maya’s arm to stop her.

"My legal history is a matter of public record," Grace told the classmate, her voice perfectly level. "The details of my childhood are not entertainment, and they are not a topic for casual conversation over coffee. I am here to study pediatric therapy. If you want to discuss the midterm, we can. If you want to discuss my past, you can leave the table."

The young man’s face flushed red. He realized he was not speaking to a viral character. He was speaking to a woman who refused to be consumed.

"Sorry," he muttered, opening his notebook. "I just thought..."

"Don't," Grace interrupted gently but firmly.

The study session resumed. The ghost was banished.

When Grace told me the story later, she did not sound shaken. She sounded bored by the encounter.

The internet’s memory was long, but Grace’s boundary was stronger.
