Chapter 16 - The Campus Arrival

|
August arrived with the heavy humidity typical of the East Coast. We packed Daniel’s car with cardboard boxes, a desk lamp, and bedding chosen for comfort rather than aesthetic coordination.
Grace’s university was three hours away.
It was a deliberate distance. Far enough to require planning for a visit, but close enough for an emergency.
When we carried her boxes into the dormitory, her new roommate, a girl named Maya, was already unpacking. Maya had arranged her side of the room perfectly. She had a ring light clamped to her desk and a tripod standing in the corner.
Daniel and I both noticed the equipment. We said nothing.
Grace set her box on her bare mattress. She looked at the tripod, then at Maya.
"Hi," Grace said. "I’m Grace."
"Maya," the girl replied, smiling brightly. "I hope you don’t mind, I do a bit of lifestyle vlogging. Just college routines, study tips, things like that. I’ll try to keep it quiet when you’re studying."
Grace did not unpack her box. She stood straight, her hands resting casually in her pockets.
"I don’t mind if you film yourself," Grace said. "But I need to be clear about my boundaries. I do not consent to being filmed, photographed, or recorded in this room. My voice, my face, and my belongings cannot be in your videos."
Maya blinked, slightly taken aback by the formality.
"Oh, sure," Maya said. "I can blur you out or just film facing the wall."
"I prefer the camera is never pointed at my side of the room," Grace clarified. "Even if it’s turned off. If that’s going to interfere with your channel, we should speak to the RA today to arrange a room swap. I won't be offended, but I won't compromise."
Maya looked at the tripod, then back at Grace’s calm, unyielding expression.
"It’s fine," Maya said softly. "I can film in the library study rooms. Your side is your side."
"Thank you," Grace said.
She began unpacking.

Daniel caught my eye from the doorway. He exhaled a long breath.
We drove home that afternoon knowing she did not need us to guard her door. She had built her own lock.
