My mother’s hands pinned Grace’s shoulders against the chair while Sabrina cut through my eleven-year-old daughter’s braid.

Connor visited Grace’s university during the spring.

He was studying media ethics and documentary filmmaking at a college in the Midwest. He arrived on a Friday afternoon, carrying a worn canvas backpack and a camera bag that he left zipped shut in the trunk of his car.

Grace took him to her favorite campus diner. I knew about the visit because Connor had texted Daniel to ask if it was a good weekend for him to be on the East Coast.

Connor had learned to ask before assuming presence was welcome.

They sat in a booth near the window.

"How are your classes?" Grace asked him.

"Heavy," Connor admitted. "We spent the last two weeks discussing the ethical obligations of filmmakers when their subjects are minors. The professor showed a documentary about child actors."

Grace stirred her iced tea. "Did you tell the class about your background?"

"No," Connor said. "I didn't feel like being a case study. But I thought about you the whole time."

He looked at the table. He was twenty-one now, carrying the quiet, persistent guilt of the older cousin who had operated the secondary camera. He had been a child himself, manipulated by Sabrina, but he refused to use that as a complete shield.

"Grace," Connor said. "I’m working on my senior thesis project. It’s about the legal gaps in child influencer protections."

Grace stopped stirring.

"I am not asking you to be in it," Connor said quickly, raising a hand. "I would never put a camera near you again. I just wanted you to know what I’m making. I want to interview lawmakers, advocates, and lawyers. I want to show how the system fails."

Grace looked at him.

"Are you doing this for a grade, or are you doing this to apologize to me?" she asked.

Connor swallowed hard. "A little of both."

"You don't owe me a movie, Connor," Grace said. "You owe me respect. You’ve given me that."

"I know. But I need to make this."

"Then make it," Grace told him. "Just leave my name out of it."
