Chapter 26 - The New Law

|

The bill passed the state legislature in late May.

It was dubbed the "Digital Child Protection Act." It required parents to set aside fifty percent of gross earnings into a blocked trust for any minor featured in monetized online content. It also established a right to erasure, allowing individuals over the age of eighteen to request the permanent deletion of content featuring them that was uploaded during their childhood.

I watched the news broadcast of the governor signing the bill into law.

The state senator stood at the podium, surrounded by advocates.

"This legislation was shaped by the invaluable, courageous input of survivors who wish to remain anonymous," the senator announced to the press. "They know firsthand the devastating cost of unregulated digital exploitation. Today, we ensure that the internet is no longer a lawless frontier for child labor."

Grace was not at the press conference. She was at the university library, studying for her final exams.

I sent her a text message with a link to the news article.

It passed, I wrote.

Five minutes later, my phone buzzed with her reply.

I know. Back to studying for neuro.

She did not need public recognition. She did not need a plaque, a medal, or a viral post claiming credit for the victory.

The victory itself was the prize.

By remaining anonymous, Grace had achieved something Sabrina and Evelyn had never understood. True power did not require an audience. True impact did not need a view count.

Grace had fundamentally changed the law of the state from the shadows, protecting thousands of children she would never meet.

When Daniel came home from work, I showed him the article. He read it in silence, a profound look of respect washing over his face.

"She beat them," Daniel whispered. "She completely dismantled their world."

"She built a better one," I corrected him.

We ordered a pizza that night. We did not celebrate loudly. We simply ate in peace, knowing the world was a fraction safer because of our daughter.
